HOPE from the NAUGHTY SEAT part 5

Look at our reason for HOPE.  Our souls do not have to sit in the naughty seat forever.  Those walking around in darkness have seen a great light… For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  (Isaiah 9:2,6)  Amazing!  For God so loved the world he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish (walking in darkness) but will have eternal life (walking in his light).  Isaiah says that a child will be born to us, a light dawned for us, and his name will be:

Wonderful.  There is nothing about him that lacks amazement.  He is full of wonder.  He is wonder-full.  Every fiber of his being is awesome.  When he reveals his glory, the world drops its jaw in awesome wonder.  Even the rocks will cry out that he is King.

Counselor.  Isaiah asks in chapter 40, verse 13- Who has understood the mind of the Lord, or instructed him as his counselor?  This child is the wisdom of God.  He is the source of all knowledge.  Knowing him and fearing him is the beginning of wisdom, the Proverbs say.

Mighty.  He could stop a storm in its tracks merely by saying, “be still.”  The Bible says that he was in the beginning and that all things were made through him.  In fact, everything that was made, was made though him.  He even conquered the darkness of the grave.  Isaiah 40 says, "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who HOPE in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint.”

God.  Don’t miss this.  700 years before Jesus wears swaddling clothes, Isaiah says, a child will be born… and he will be called MIGHTY GOD.  This human being, will be rightfully, justifiably, absolutely be known and called God.  In fact, at his name, every knee will bow on earth and heaven.  Isaiah 40 also says, “To whom will you compare me?  Or who is my equal? Says the Holy One.  Lift your eyes and look to the heavens; Who created all these?  Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow weary, and his understanding no one can fathom."

Everlasting.  He is from all eternity.  He never began and never will end. He always was and is and is to come.  The Bible says, in fact, that he is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, himself.  Everything begins and ends with him.

Father.  A tricky title, but inspiring as well.  For what other child could say that he is the Father?  I love it that Jesus has the audacity to declare that he and God the Father are one!  This is the mystery of God, the Trinity, Father-Son-Spirit, God is One.  He to is the one who created all things.  He didn’t birth them out, as many other stories about ancient god-mothers would proclaim, that creation came out of them- and that therefore we are somehow part of god.  No, Jesus created everything out of nothing.  He is the loving source of all there is and he continues this day to love and play and sing and dine and invest in his children.

Prince.  All authority in heaven and earth are his.  He owned it and he rightfully claimed it.  He is the rightful heir to all power and majesty and honor and glory that is possessed by only God.  He is the King of kings, Lord of Lords.  And he is a good governor.  Of his government there will be no end.  Ever.

Of Peace.  He is not ruthless.  In his lordship, he does not lord it over us.  He is not a tyrant.  He is not taxing.  He is the Lion of Judah, but he is also the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.  The sins of the world have caused and today are causing so much disruption and despair and death.  Sin destroys peace.  But Jesus, he destroys sin and ushers peace into the room to sit among us.  Don’t be anxious about anything, but by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God, and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.  Amen.
