119 Tet

How much would you pay for instructions from God?  How much would you be willing to spend to have God tell you how to live, how to do something, how to solve problems, how to operate in life?  $10?  $25?  $1,000?  More?  How much?  In other words, how precious are God’s commands in your life?  To receive and understand God’s instructions, what cost is worth it?  How much are you ready to give up?

I’m gripped by this.  Look at verse 72 of psalm 119.  The writer says to God, "Your instructions are more valuable, more precious, than mountains and piles of gold and silver."  In other words, he would be willing to pay any amount of anything to be able to embrace God’s commands.  In fact, he is even glad to have suffered- because it meant that he can have God’s instructions (verse 71).  He truly believes in the incomparably precious worth of God’s commands (verse 66)!

So I ask myself again: How much would you pay for a command from God?  (Here is the next section of Psalm 119)

65 You have done many good things for me, Lord,
      just as you promised.
66 I believe in your commands;
      now teach me good judgment and knowledge.
67 I used to wander off until you disciplined me;
      but now I closely follow your word.
68 You are good and do only good;
      teach me your decrees.
69 Arrogant people smear me with lies,
      but in truth I obey your commandments with all my heart.
70 Their hearts are dull and stupid,
      but I delight in your instructions.
71 My suffering was good for me,
      for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.
72 Your instructions are more valuable to me
      than millions in gold and silver.
