It has been 100 years since the world series banner could be flown by a Chicago Cub. For those of you who don’t naturally imagine mathematics, allow me visualize that with you. Since 1908, these are all of the years that have come and gone since the Cubs last won the world series:
1909 1910 1911 1912 1913 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928 1929 1930 1931 1932 1933 1934 1935 1936 1937 1938 1939 1940 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007
I’m not prophecying that the Cubs will actually win the World Series this year. But I’d like to. I think they just might pull it off. Over the years, I’ve come to expect a goat, or a blown arm, or a dynamite sneeze to wipe out the Cubbies chance at being good. I grew nervous last week after Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano went down… and the road schedule loomed over them. But the guys survived. And this weekend… after sweeping the dreaded White Sox, the Cubs are TWENTY games over .500 and have the best record in baseball.
I know this seems to have little to do with being a Jesus Follower… but I think the Bible is full of times of drought… which makes the advent of the King all that much sweeter for those who continued to be faithful in the dry times.
If you would like to know what it’s like to exercise Romans 5:3-5… well, then you can convert to the Cubs today. See this article from espn.com to get started. Or, imbibe in the cheesey joy of their new victory song: Go Cubs Go!
Benji says hello to you Billy Fyffe! We love that you love him, man! Thanks! And no, baseball isn’t boring at all. You’ll have to go to a game with me sometime. Baseball is the most biblical sport actually… graphic like Judges, theological like Romans… enduring and inspirational like Acts… and the Cubs have been like Ecclesiastes for 99 years.
Anyways, I’d be glad to give Rounders a go with you dude.
Ken, baseball is the most boring sport in the world. I went to see the Cardinals v Mets last year and it was so boring. Rounders? Now thats where it is at. Like baseball a bit but better. We’ll maybe get a game next week. Can’t wait to see you. Tell Ben I say hello and bring a photo of him. I miss him.
